Senior Instructor of the North Side Branch

Darin grew up in a cul-de-sac where 22 children fought daily with only one thing in mind - survival. Learning by experience, Darin won most street fights by learning the street skills early and not giving his opponent an opportunity to gain the advantage. In the street fights, Darin used what worked and ignored techniques that looked good but were ineffective.

It was this keen eye for detail that inspired Darin to learn Wing Chun from Sifu Allan Graham. After observing many different styles and watching the instructors closely, Darin knew immediately that Wing Chun, as taught by Sifu Graham, was far above any other system of self-defence he had ever seen, including his street fighting.

Darin is now the senior instructor in the Canberra Wing Chun Academy, having trained seriously for many years. He has also spent many years in the security industry and has found his Wing Chun to be totally effective in a number of dangerous situations, including dealing with multiple attackers in confined situations. Moreover, a further benefit for Darin in learning Wing Chun has been the loss of over 30 kg in weight, which he attributes to the training program at the Canberra Wing Chun Academy.

Additionally, Darin has broadened his skills by completing a number of professional Close Personal Protection courses. Subjects covered included counter terrorism, VIP protection, room clearances, pressure points and crowd control. Darin found during the courses that his Wing Chun techniques would often leave the instructors at a loss as to how to deal with such an efficient fighting system as Wing Chun.

Darin is acutely aware of the devastating application of Wing Chun. Years training with the Canberra Wing Chun Academy has transformed Darin from a street fighter to a serious martial artist who would rather deflect a confrontation than apply his martial arts knowledge physically.

Darin is now running the North Side Branch of the Academy.
